Folding Curtains

I made these curtains in celebration of my classmate Jingzi’s orderly habits and adoration of the morning sun.

Jingzi lives in a small apartment in Center City Philadelphia and is studying Industrial Design. She really enjoys taking photographs and making pretty things.

Her tidy studio apartment is colorfully decorated and each object is thoughtfully placed in it’s home. Her apartment functions as a living area and also as a design studio where she spends many hours working throughout her busy week.

One of the most significant things that I have learned while becoming acquainted with Jingzi other than her tidiness is that she cherishes the morning. Believing that the productivity of her fast paced days is highly determined by what kind of morning she is having, she pairs a methodical routine with an organized living space to help her make the best of this time.

“I feel like morning is very important...My coffee machine is working, my water cooker is working, my microwave is working, my water is running, my teeth are brushing...I really like morning, it is a very good beginning for me. The whole day your gears work in that way.”

A cup of tea when she wakes up is an integral step in her morning. In order to avoid clutter in her tiny kitchen, she has arranged her tea and coffee pots on her window sill which she admits can be a bit cumbersome when drawing her curtains. In doing so she frequently knocks over her plants or coffee and makes bit of a mess. This area seemed to be the only real hitch in an otherwise well oiled machine. She went on to complain that her white curtains were unusually muted compared to the rest of her apartment and she would like them to draw up and down rather than side to side.

The curtains that I made to replace these fold neatly up and down to avoid knocking things over.
